BOWLING GREEN, O.--Patrick M. Conrey, a firefighter/EMT from Clearwater, Florida, will run the 26-mile Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon in full turnout gear on May 4, 2008, in an effort to raise money for the children of Oscar Armstrong II (Cincinnati FD) and Captain Robin Broxterman (Colerain FD), both of whom died in the line of duty.
Conrey became inspired to make the run when he heard a presentation by Chief Tom Lakamp and Captain Mike Kirby (CFD) about Armstrong's line of duty death that occurred on March 21, 2003.
Armstrong died from injuries sustained while fighting a residential structure fire. He left behind a fiancee, two sons, and a daughter who was born after his death.
After hearing the story, Conrey felt like he had to do something to honor Armstrong.
"When we say we will never forget, we better mean it," said Conrey.
Conrey is inviting any and all members of the fire service to run all or part of the marathon with him.
After the line of duty deaths of Brian Schira and Robin Broxterman on April 4, and at the urging of the Armstrong family, it was decided to add the Broxterman children to the foundation.
Anyone who wishes to make a donation can do so at any Fifth Third Bank.
Participants at the May 2008 State Fire School will also have the opportunity to participate in an auction for several fire helmets (donated by Total Fire Group and Lion Apparel). All proceeds will be deposited in the Fifth Third account.
